How to get rich the smart way? Read what some creative people did:

1. Million Dollar Homepage

1000000 pixels, charge a dollar per pixel – that’s perhaps the dumbest idea for online business anyone could have possible come up with. Still, Alex Tew, a 21-year-old who came up with the idea, is now a millionaire.

What is the idea? (from FAQ on the site)

The idea is simple: to try and make $1m (US) by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each. Hence, ‘The Million Dollar Homepage”. The main motivation for doing this is to pay for my degree studies, because I don’t like the idea of graduating with a huge student debt. I know people who are paying off student loans 15-20 years after they graduated. Not a nice thought!
So, everyone is welcome to buy my pixels, which are available in 100-pixel ‘blocks’ (each measuring 10×10 pixels). You will see the homepage is divided into 10,000 of these 100-pixel blocks (hence there are 1,000,000 pixels in total). The reason for selling them in 100-pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful.
You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available (see the live stats in the top right corner of the page). When you buy some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed.
The pixels you buy will be displayed on the homepage permanently. The homepage will not change. Using some of the money I make from the site, I guarantee to keep it online for at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. I want it to become a kind of internet time capsule. So, in the long run, I believe the pixels will offer good value. You will have a piece of internet history!

2. SantaMail

Ok, how’s that for a brilliant idea. Get a postal address at North Pole, Alaska, pretend you are Santa Claus and charge parents 10 bucks for every letter you send to their kids? Well, Byron Reese sent over 200000 letters since the start of the business in 2001, which makes him a couple million dollars richer.

About SantaMail from their site

Since 2002, Santa has been helping us write over 275,000 personalized Christmas letters. Santa makes sure that we use the finest heirloom-quality, acid-free linen paper so that his letters last a lifetime.

As Santa’s helpers, we help Santa print his letters and then mail them to him in North Pole, Alaska where he affixes a Christmas stamp on it and sends it on the way to your child. From there, the letter gets postmarked and mailed. (After December 16, he has us mail them directly from Austin, Texas so they reach the children in time!).

3. Doggles

Create goggles for dogs and sell them online? Boy, this IS the dumbest idea for a business. How in the world did they manage to become millionaires and have shops all over the world with that one? Beyond me.

About Doggles from their site

We are famous for Doggles goggles for dogs – the first and only eye protection designed and created just for dogs! Seen on CNN, Regis and Kelly, The Today Show, Good Morning America and many others, they are quite a hit with everyone who has tried them! We are also an environmentally conscious organization, using as much “green” or recycled fabrics and materials in our products as possible, always keeping in mind that what is good for our planet is also good for our pets. Our standards are high, and you will see this in each and every one of our products. We are market leaders in the design and manufacture of tough and durable and yes, even “green”, dog toys. Please be sure to check our offerings in the toy category as you look through our site. Our outdoor line has won the praise of many an outdoor enthusiast as we continue to grow and improve the line. And of course, our fashion sense has never ended as we are always adding and improving to our fashion harness line. We have a wide range of products that are truly functional and have helped many pets over the years as we continue to innovate in the pet products field. As always, keep an eye on us for more.

4. LaserMonks

LaserMonks.com is a for-profit subsidiary of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank, an eight-monk monastery in the hills of Monroe County, 90 miles northwest of Madison. Yeah, real monks refilling your cartridges. Hallelujah! Their 2005 sales were $2.5 million! Praise the Lord.

5. AntennaBalls

You can’t sell antenna ball online. There is no way. And surely it wouldn’t make you rich. But this is exactly what Jason Wall did, and now he is now a millionaire.

6. FitDeck

Create a deck of cards featuring exercise routines, and sell it online for $18.95. Sounds like a disaster idea to me. But former Navy SEAL and fitness instructor Phil Black reported last year sales of $4.7 million. Surely beats what military pays.

7. PositivesDating.Com

How would you like to go on a date with an HIV positive person? Paul Graves and Brandon Koechlin thought that someone would, so they created a dating site for HIV positive folks last year. Projected 2006 sales are $110,000, and the two hope to have 50,000 members by their two-year mark.

8. Designer Diaper Bags

Christie Rein was tired of carrying diapers around in a freezer bag. The 34-year-old mother of three found herself constantly stuffing diapers for her infant son into freezer bags to keep them from getting scrunched up in her purse. Rein wanted something that was compact, sleek and stylish, so in November 2004, she sat down with her husband, Marcus, who helped her design a custom diaper bag that’s big enough to hold a travel pack of wipes and two to four diapers. With more than $180,000 in sales for 2005, Christie’s company, Diapees & Wipees, has bags in 22 different styles, available online and in 120 boutiques across the globe for $14.99.

9. PickyDomains

Hire another person to think of a cool domain name for you? No way people would pay for this. Actually, naming domain names for others turned out a thriving business, especially, when you make the entire process risk free. PickyDomains currently has a waiting list of people who want to PAY the service to come up with a snappy memorable domain name. PickyDomains is expected to hit six figures this year.

10. Lucky Wishbone Co.

Fake wishbones. Now, this stupid idea is just destined to flop. Who in the world needs FAKE PLASTIC wishbones? A lot of people, it turns out. Now producing 30,000 wishbones daily (they retail for 3 bucks a pop) Ken Ahroni, the company founder, expects 2006 sales to reach $1 million.

Just what exactly is T-1? T-1 is a digital communication line offered by a telecom company in order to carry digital communication traffic within a private business network and linking it to service providers for internet access, carrying a bandwidth of 1.544 megabits per second. Businesses shop for T1 services in order to have a computer network and multiple phone lines installed, maintained and repaired, among others. But how should a business shop for T1 services? Should a company just shop for phone lines and simply choose who is offering cheap phone services, dial tone and internet access?

It would be best to find a telecom company that offers not just cheap phone services but a wide range of telecom services and consultancies. The telecom company should be both reliable and reputable. A good benchmark would be if the telecom company is state licensed. Furthermore, it should also be certified by the Building Industry Consulting Service International, Inc. or BICSI as a Registered Communications Distribution Designer or RCDD. Any RCDD certified company is required to adhere to the BICSI RCDD Standards of Conduct as well as the BICSI Code of Ethics upholding the highest standards in professional and ethical behavior in the Information Transport Systems (ITS) industry, whether in the rendering of services or the provision of products.

It is basic for a telecom company to be able to install, maintain, repair or move the leading brands in telephone and voice mail systems, covering the smallest systems with less than 10 phones to the largest call centers with phone extensions of up to several hundred. Call Accounting, Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) and other special applications should be supported, as well.

Another item important to businesses that is within the turf of telecom companies is Voice IP or VoIP technology. VoIP systems can establish IP connections across offices that are distant geographically; can integrate computers with phones; can manage phone answering and directing services for several offices from a centrally managed location; and can apply different call forwarding options.

The telecom company you choose should base the design and implementation of a special VoIP solution on your particular business requirements. It should also have the proper relationship with several VoIP carriers so as to have the capability of getting you the lowest costs possible.

The installation and maintenance of fiber optic cabling, structured cabling, computer Ethernet cabling and phone cabling and jacks are likewise within the services provided by telecom companies. Fiber optic cabling in particular is used to create connections between buildings. It is also used for distances not covered by copper cable capabilities.

Tribute Telecom, LLC, based in Tampa, FL, is a Florida state licensed and BICSI RCDD certified telecom company that provides all the aforementioned services at the highest quality and with cost effective rates. In addition to that, Tribute Telecom, LLC offers consultancy services wherein your company’s telephone, cellular phone and Internet service invoices are meticulously inspected for billing errors. Upon finding any errors, Tribute Telecom, LLC works for reimbursements from your service providers or carriers. Tribute Telecom, LLC can also work to get lower rates for you from your service providers. Like about 90% of their clients, you can save up to 20% to 50% on your telecom expenses.

So when your business has to shop for T1 services, do not just shop for phone lines and do not automatically choose the company that offers cheap phone services and internet access. Make sure you get a reputable professional telecom company that is duly licensed and certified and can provide a full range of telecom services with the most cost effective arrangements.

I know what you’re thinking, start and online business without having to market or advertise? Well it’s true. It is one component to a two part approach for starting an online business. For year’s many online e-Commerce businesses have attributed their success and associated costs to the traditional way of doing business online.

Approach #1

The traditional approach to starting an online e-Commerce business is to follow some simple actions to start the process. The following is a list of action items in no particular order that need to happen prior to set-up.

ü Perform Market Research on the Business You want to Start

ü Understand Drop Shipping or inventory management

ü Legalize Your Business

ü Create or buy a Domain Name

ü Web Hosting or Site Creation

ü Open a Checking Account

ü eMail

ü Website Optimization

ü Customer Service

ü Marketing

ü Affiliate Programs

ü Shopping Carts

ü Obtain a Merchant Account

ü Perform Competitive Research on the Internet

ü Order Fulfillment

This is what the traditional approach is to starting an online e-Commerce business. Sounds like the same old information that you get from millions of websites on the internet. Times have changed and so has the business model. Business owners have spent countless dollars to search engines for advertising their business website. It is time that businesses that sell products get an upper hand on the market and put them in the driver’s seat. Online businesses have to pay for advertising, pay for marketing, invest countless hours on natural SEO, and a myriad of other out of pocket money that should remain in the possession of the business owner. The first approach continues to dominate the internet and will in the future.

Approach #2

The second approach requires “out-of-box” thinking. This approach focuses to looking at an online e-Commerce business with a fresh set of eyes. The first approach will act as a platform or vehicle for which businesses will process the orders and the second approach catapults the first. This model is known by multi-million dollar companies, but not to small businesses online that sell products. Remember that the traditional model is still being used and the mindset has not shifted from how to drive traffic to an e-Commerce website. Until the mindset is changed and the business owner chooses another path, business owners will not see the benefit to this approach. A comprehensive solution using the first and second approach has been fully developed and matured; however, online businesses still fail to realize their potential to capture the business. Imagine an online e-Commerce business that no longer requires excessive money to market and advertise, but simply generates income without the added expense. The thought of this approach can seem unreal. This is not the case. The reality is that the solution to this age old internet problem has been solved. In order to conceptualize this approach it does require that a business adopt this new method of business. The good news for those business owners that are skeptical of this approach, businesses do not have to abandon the traditional approach. That can continue as normal in parallel and adopt the second to achieve colossal results.

Business owners should feel that their interest level in the second approach has changed after reading this article. The desire for every business owner is to minimize costs and increase profitability. Adopting a new way to growing company profitability is here to stay it is up to the business owner to seize the opportunity before them. New business start-up’s that do not have a significant amount of capital to advertise, market, attract customers, and drive business, this is the time to act on the new approach to internet business. In searching the internet one can find work from home programs, purchase an online business already operational, start an online business, affiliate programs, financial blogging, and many more. The key is to develop a baseline of income from an e-Commerce business so that after your customer base is set, additional customers that attach themselves to you become pure profit. To expand on this, if your customer base enables a business to generate revenue with associated profit to cover expenses, the balance is profit that has no expense attached to it. The second approach to this business model achieves this. Once customers understand your approach and business overall, the business is yours to lose.

Getting out of business is a process. The length of time required to complete the process is directly related to the complexity of the business, and the circumstances underlying the decision to get out. Planning how you exit your business is just as important as how you started it.

The exit process, timing of events; and tasks associated need to be tailored to the type and complexity of the business. Each case is individual because reasons for dissolution differ, and problems that arise are unique to each circumstance. The following checklist contains key elements that should be evaluated as early in the exit process as possible to eliminate pitfalls later on.

The process for exiting a business should include evaluation of the following points:

1. Engage Professionals & Consultants as Team Members.

2. Prepare a List of Assets & Perform a Physical Inventory.

3. Perform a Valuation of the Business.

4. Prepare Detailed Plan & Assign Responsibilities.

5. Release Announcements & Notices.

6. Conclude or Transfer Contract Obligations.

7. Dispose of & Transfer Assets.

8. Settle Accounts Payable & Debt Obligations.

9. Prepare Final Financial Statements & Tax Returns

10. File Articles of Dissolution.

11. Prepare & Issue Special Filings, Notices, Informational Returns, & Taxes.

12. Receive Tax Clearance Notice.

13. Close Bank Account.

14. Store Business Records

The process for successfully exiting a business requires the same amount if not even more planning as starting the business. While the process may be easier, it is likely to be less enjoyable and more stressful. The best advice for business owners is to incorporate potential exit strategies in the early stages of setting up their business. Vigilance and diligent managerial oversight is needed to ensure that complications and problems which could affect dissolution, and net value, do not develop into roadblocks. When the time comes to divest or sell the business, be sure to engage the relevant expertise needed, and prepare an action plan.

We Buy Your Business

In today’s dynamic business environment you’re either Growing or Going…out of business that is! If you’re part of the latter contingent and have made the decision to get out of a business but are unable to transition your business internally or sell it as an intact entity, full or partial liquidation of assets may be an appropriate exit strategy. Asset liquidation can provide quick cash and assist in diversifying equity. However, before you terminate your lease, sell a key piece of equipment, or disconnect your utilities, make sure you have a well-thought-out plan.

Getting out of business successfully requires careful planning from start to finish. If you are looking at asset liquidation as a part of your exit strategy, consider incorporating the following recommendations into your plan to increase your chances for success.

1. Talk to your lawyer and accountant.

2. Establish the liquidation value of your assets; remember liquidation vs. retail value can differ substantially.

3. Identify the best venue and timetable to sell your assets.

4. Arrange the sale at the most appropriate location with an expert.

5. Use a non-recourse bill of sale.

Understanding and incorporating these steps into your exit plan will not only help you recover as much money as possible, they may also help you achieve the freedom needed to pursue new endeavors.

It is important to note that the recommendations discussed above are intended to serve as a general overview to assist with the asset liquidation process. It is not a substitute for case-specific advice that only your lawyer and/or accountant can provide. Also, depending on the situation and necessity of business divesture, the cooperation of creditors may need to be considered. Cover your bases and talk to the experts before liquidating any assets that may be in question.

Initiate the process by preparing a current inventory of your business assets. Include photographs, serial numbers and a brief description of the condition of each item if possible. A thorough inventory will save considerable time and expense as you navigate the sale process and can be invaluable if you are asked to provide documentation for creditors or the Internal Revenue Service.

Next, start preparing your assets for sale. To elicit the best offers, take care that you do not diminish the appeal of your most marketable items by lumping them in with outdated or worn-out equipment, furniture or inventory. In most cases the most lucrative value of these lesser items may be in the form of a tax deduction, so why not donate them to an appropriate charity?

Finally, don’t overlook your intangible assets. For example, is your lease assignable? Are the business licenses, permits, patents or trademarks that you hold in demand? Can they be transferred? Is there a market for your customer list, contract rights or accounts? You may need to check with your attorney or accountant to determine what information and agreements are transferable but once cleared these types of assets can also provide a substantial return.

We Buy Your Business (WBYB) provides cash offers for all assets in order to assist in the liquidation process.
